Ted Libbey Bio
Ted Libbey became the National Endowment’s
Director of Media Arts in September 2002. Prior to that he
served as a regular commentator for National Public Radio,
and was featured in a weekly segment devoted to recordings
of the core classical music repertory that ran from 1989 until
early in 2003 on NPR’s “Performance Today.” Mr. Libbey served
as editor of High Fidelity and Mual America magazines from
1984 to 1990. He was a music critic for The New York Times
from 1981 to 1984 and was the senior music critic of The Washington
Star from 1978 until 1981. He has also served as a programming
consultant to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts in Washington, D.C. (1991-92) and as consultant to the
United States Information Agency’s “Artistic Ambassador” program
(1986-1998). Mr. Libbey received his B.A. from Yale University
and did his doctoral work at Stanford University, where he also
served as assistant conductor of the university orchestra. He
is the author of several books, including histories of Carnegie
Hall and the National Symphony Orchestra as well as the best-selling
NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection (1994; 2nd
ed. 1999), published by Workman Publishing Co. He is currently
finishing an encyclopedia of classical music for Workman.
